Bug Out Bags
A bug out bag is a pre-packed evacuation kit built to sustain a person for roughly seventy-two hours away from home, staged and ready before it is ever needed. Evacuations rarely come with much warning, whether the cause is a wildfire, flood, chemical spill, or infrastructure failure, and households that must assemble supplies in the moment leave essentials behind. Preparedness-minded civilians, emergency responders, and agencies that stage go-kits for personnel all build from this category.
Stocked options include pre-made bug out bag kits assembled around food, water, shelter, first aid, and tools, along with bags suited for building a custom kit from the ground up. Pre-made options from suppliers such as Echo-Sigma and Mayday Industries provide a vetted baseline, while build-your-own users can select each component to match their region, family size, and skills.
The core planning framework is simple: cover water, food, shelter, warmth, light, first aid, and communication for three days, then tailor. Weight discipline matters more than most first-time builders expect, with a common target of keeping the loaded bag under about twenty percent of body weight so it can actually be carried at a walking pace for hours. Stage the bag where you would exit, in a hall closet or vehicle, revisit contents seasonally, and rotate anything with an expiration date. A pre-made kit that gets personalized over time is a faster path to readiness than a perfect custom build that never gets finished.
Deepen the kit with emergency food and water, add an IFAK for trauma readiness, and consider respiratory protection where regional hazards warrant it.

A bug out bag, also called a BOB or go bag, is a pre-packed emergency kit designed to sustain you for 72 hours or more when you need to leave your location quickly. It's meant to be grabbed on the way out the door, with everything you need already inside. Most are built around a sturdy pack loaded with water, food, medical supplies, shelter, light, and tools.
Most emergencies don't announce themselves: a hurricane changes track overnight, a wildfire moves faster than forecast, or a grid failure stretches from hours into days. A bug out bag works on the same logic as a fire extinguisher or a spare tire, preparing you before the emergency is in front of you, while preparation is still possible. It also makes you an asset to the people around you, since a tourniquet, extra water, or a working light helps your neighbors as much as it helps you.
Every serious bug out bag covers six categories: the carry platform, medical and trauma supplies, water and purification, food, tools and light, and shelter and warmth. Food should be calorie-dense and need little or no preparation, and water should be paired with a filter so you can refill along the way. A fixed blade, fire starters, a headlamp with spare batteries, and an emergency blanket or bivy round out the essentials.
Look for a 35–55L pack with a structured frame, a load-bearing hip belt, MOLLE webbing for expansion, and durable fabric rated for outdoor use. Tactical and military-style packs from Eberlestock, Condor, and Tasmanian Tiger fit the bill, since they're built to carry weight over distance and let you attach an IFAK or water bottle pouch to the outside with modular pouches. Choose a size you can realistically carry on foot, since a bigger pack invites more weight.
A general rule is to keep your loaded BOB under 20–25% of your body weight. Most practical setups fall between 25–40 lbs depending on scenario length and individual fitness. A lighter, well-prioritized kit outperforms a heavy kit with filler every time.
A bug out bag is built for leaving home and sustaining yourself for multiple days. A get home bag is lighter and optimized for a single mission: getting from wherever you are back to home. It's typically kept in a vehicle or at work.
Pre-made kits are faster to acquire and well-suited for buyers who want a ready solution. Building your own gives you control over every component, including weight, quality, and configuration. That makes it the better option for buyers with specific requirements or gear they already own.
Give every family member who can carry a pack their own bag, sized to what they can realistically carry, with water, food, a layer of clothing, a light, and something to keep kids calm and occupied. Adults can carry the shared gear, such as the primary medical kit, water filtration, shelter, and extra food, along with supplies for infants, older family members, and pets as needed. Split copies of family documents, medications, and a list of emergency contacts and meeting points across more than one bag, so no single pack holds everything.
At minimum, carry trauma supplies for life-threatening bleeding, including a tourniquet, hemostatic gauze, a pressure bandage, and a chest seal, all of which fit in a compact IFAK. Add first aid supplies for the everyday injuries that are more likely over several days, like adhesive bandages, blister care, antiseptic wipes, pain relievers, and allergy medication, along with any prescription medications you rely on. Train on everything you carry, and check expiration dates whenever you inspect the bag.
Pack for the worst weather you might face rather than the weather on the day you packed, focusing on layers you can add or remove. A moisture-wicking base layer, an insulating layer, a rain shell, a hat, gloves, and at least two extra pairs of wool or synthetic socks cover most situations, and sturdy, broken-in footwear matters more than almost anything else if you'll be walking. Swap clothing out as the seasons change, and keep it in a waterproof bag inside the pack.
Yes. Keep copies of IDs, insurance policies, property records, medical information, and prescriptions, along with a list of emergency contacts, in a waterproof bag or on an encrypted USB drive. Cash in small bills is worth carrying too, since card readers and ATMs may be down during a power or network outage. A paper map of your area and an all-weather notebook round out the essentials when phones aren't reliable.
Keep your bug out bag somewhere you can grab it on the way out the door, like a hall closet, near the garage entry, or by your bedroom, rather than buried in a basement or attic. Store it in a cool, dry spot, since heat shortens the life of food, water, batteries, and medical supplies. Many people also keep a second bag or a get home bag in their vehicle, so they're covered whether they're home or away.
Bugging in means sheltering in place at home and relying on the supplies you've stored there, while bugging out means leaving because staying is no longer safe, such as during a wildfire, flood, or evacuation order. For many emergencies, staying home is the safer and more comfortable option, since your home holds far more food and water than any pack can carry. A good plan prepares for both, with a stocked home and a packed bug out bag ready if you have to leave.
Eberlestock HiSpeed II Backpack
A low-drag, low-profile pack, the HiSpeed II has a contoured shape that tapers at the top and bottom so it rides close to the body. Pairs of quick-disconnect, side-mounted compression straps draw the load upward over your center of gravity, and the main compartment has a fold-away divider to separate or combine space, a mesh zippered pocket, and a hydration sleeve. It holds 37.5 liters, weighs 5 lbs 10 oz, and comes with a coyote brown rain cover.
Eberlestock Freefall 3000 Backpack
Eberlestock built the Freefall 3000 as a low-drag platform for multi-day trips with a minimalist kit or day trips with a robust setup, and a well-stocked go bag is one of its intended uses. The 46-liter pack adds an interior partition over the Freefall 2000, along with a spacious top lid, seven interior pockets, a water bladder sleeve, and full-length zipper access. A padded pull-forward hip belt with zipper pockets, an adjustable shoulder harness, dual water bottle pockets, and compression straps carry the load at 5 lbs 1 oz.
Eberlestock Battleship 120L Backpack
At 7,400 cubic inches (121.3 liters), the Battleship is Eberlestock's upgraded take on the modern mountaineering pack, built to haul a large loadout. Top and front loading make it easier to reach gear in a pack this size, and a diaphragm system can separate the top and bottom compartments. Grapple compression straps keep the load tight to your body and double as a mounting system for a sleeping pad, tent, or rifle, and the pack weighs 8 lbs 12 oz with a 36 x 14 x 11.5 inch main bag.
