First Aid
First aid and trauma care equipment bridges the gap between the moment an injury happens and the arrival of professional medical care, and in severe bleeding events that gap often determines the outcome. This category serves combat medics, EMS providers, law enforcement officers, workplace response teams, and prepared civilians who understand that emergency services take time to arrive. Whether the setting is a battlefield, a highway, a range, or a kitchen, the equipment and the training to use it are what allow a bystander to provide effective care.
This category spans individual medical supplies such as tourniquets, hemostatic gauze, and chest seals, complete medical kits from pocket IFAKs to mass casualty systems, products organized by the M.A.R.C.H. treatment sequence, and training equipment including trainer devices and wound simulation. You'll find equipment from field-proven brands like North American Rescue, Safeguard Medical, TacMed Solutions, Celox, QuikClot, and 6:8 Medical, the same suppliers equipping military units and EMS agencies.
The most useful organizing principle in this category is the distinction between everyday first aid and trauma care. Bandages and OTC supplies handle common injuries, while trauma equipment addresses the immediate killers: massive hemorrhage, airway compromise, and chest injuries. A complete preparedness posture covers both, matched to your training. Equipment you have not trained with has limited value under stress, which is why trainer versions of tourniquets and simulation gear exist as a category of their own.
Start with a kit that matches your setting, whether that's an IFAK for personal carry or a vehicle kit for the truck, and carry it in a medical pouch built for fast access.

IFAK stands for Individual First Aid Kit — a kit built to treat one person's life-threatening trauma, not general cuts and scrapes or multiple casualties. That purpose shapes everything about it, starting with size — an IFAK is small enough to mount on a belt, vest, or bag for one-handed access under stress, usually holding just the essentials: a tourniquet, hemostatic gauze, a chest seal, a pressure bandage, and gloves. "Medical kit" is the broader umbrella term, covering everything from an IFAK to a vehicle kit, a classroom kit, or a mass casualty kit, each sized and stocked differently depending on the setting and how many people it needs to treat. If you're outfitting yourself for daily carry or a duty belt, start with an IFAK; if you're stocking a vehicle, classroom, or team, look at our broader medical kits.
All three earn a place on this page for different reasons. The CAT has the strongest track record of any commercial tourniquet — the Official Tourniquet of the U.S. Army since 2005, credited with more confirmed field saves than any other model, with a one-handed application that's about as fast and intuitive as it gets. The SOF Tactical Tourniquet trades the CAT's polymer windlass for a machined, aircraft-grade aluminum one and folds down smaller, which makes it a favorite for tight spaces like an ankle kit. The SWAT-T works completely differently, using a stretch-and-wrap elastic band instead of a windlass, and its real strength is versatility — the same device can double as a pressure dressing, a sling, a way to secure a splint, or a tourniquet small and stretchy enough for a pediatric or K9 limb. That versatility comes with a trade-off in occlusion reliability compared to a windlass design, which is why most people carry it as a secondary or specialty tool rather than a primary tourniquet.
Hemostatic gauze is dressing material treated with an agent that speeds up clotting on contact with blood. Kaolin, used in products like Combat Gauze, works by activating your body's own clotting cascade, so it performs best on a patient whose coagulation system is intact. Chitosan, used in products like Celox, works differently: it binds directly to red blood cells independent of the clotting cascade, which is why it holds up better on a patient who's cold, in shock, or on blood thinners. It's meant for wounds a tourniquet can't reach, like the groin, armpit, or torso, or for bleeding that continues after a tourniquet is already applied. The Rapid formulation of Celox needs only about a minute of compression, compared to the three minutes required by standard combat gauze.
CoTCCC stands for the Committee on Tactical Combat Casualty Care, the Department of Defense body that evaluates and approves medical devices for battlefield and tactical use based on evidence rather than marketing claims. A device on the CoTCCC list, like a CAT tourniquet or Celox hemostatic gauze, has been tested against alternatives and found to meet a performance standard the military relies on for its own medics. It's a useful shortcut when comparing products, since it filters out devices that haven't been independently vetted.
M.A.R.C.H. is the treatment sequence taught in Tactical Combat Casualty Care for working through an injury in the order it's most likely to kill: Massive hemorrhage first, since uncontrolled bleeding is the most common preventable death in trauma, then Airway, Respirations (chest injuries and breathing), Circulation (shock and less obvious bleeding), and Hypothermia prevention, since blood loss itself drops body temperature, and a colder patient clots blood less effectively, compounding the original bleeding problem. The point of working through the letters in order is to treat what's most likely to kill first, rather than whatever injury looks the worst. Our M.A.R.C.H. category is organized the same way, so you can shop by which step of the sequence you're stocking for.
North American Rescue Combat Application Tourniquet (C-A-T) GEN 7
The most widely carried windlass tourniquet on the market and the Official Tourniquet of the U.S. Army since 2005, tested by the Army's Institute of Surgical Research to be 100% effective at stopping blood flow in both upper and lower extremities. The Gen 7's single routing buckle speeds up application and cuts down on wasted motion under stress, and the signature red tip gives a fast visual cue that it's been applied correctly. Counterfeits are a real problem with a product this widely copied, so we source ours directly from North American Rescue rather than through third-party marketplaces.
Celox Rapid needs only about 60 seconds of compression to stop severe arterial bleeding, compared to the 3 minutes required by standard combat gauze, which matters when you're also managing an airway or a second casualty. Its chitosan-based formula works independent of the body's own clotting cascade, so it stays effective on patients who are cold, in shock, or on blood thinners. It's on the CoTCCC list for hemorrhage control, and its Z-fold format is built for direct wound packing rather than open surface dressing.
Battle Wrap is transparent, so you can reassess a wound and watch for continued bleeding without removing the dressing and losing your seal. It's self-adhering and holds up under more stress than a traditional compression wrap, without shredding or delaminating in wet or dirty conditions. Because it comes as a 6-foot roll instead of a single fixed-size pad, you cut only what a wound needs, so one roll can often treat more than one wound rather than being used up on the first, and its packaged size, about 4.5 x 1 inches, takes up a fraction of the space a traditional compression bandage does. Pair it with a hemostatic gauze underneath and the wrap adds circumferential pressure on top, which is exactly the layered approach a junctional wound, like the groin or armpit, often needs.
The Sentinel is built to address tension pneumothorax, a leading cause of preventable death from a penetrating chest wound, by venting trapped air and blood while keeping the seal in place. The 360° adhesive is designed to stay stuck in sweaty, wet, or hairy conditions where lesser seals tend to peel, and the transparent design lets you monitor the wound without lifting the seal. Because the adhesive is built to stay fully stuck rather than peel loose over time, it also cuts down on the odds you'll need to apply a second seal to the same wound. It packs down to about 7 x 4 inches and roughly 1 ounce, so it adds little bulk to an IFAK.
XShear 7.5" Heavy Duty Trauma Shears
XShear's blades are roughly twice as thick as a standard pair of trauma shears, with a titanium coating that holds an edge through heavier use, so they'll cut through firefighter turnout gear, motorcycle leathers, or a wetsuit without folding like a cheaper pair will. The blunt, curved tip is built to ride against skin without cutting it, which matters when you're working fast and close to an injury. The soft-touch handles stay grippy even with wet or gloved hands, which is exactly when a dropped tool costs you time.
