There are two main types of hemostatic gauze used in tactical medicine. Chitosan-based gauze -- including Celox and ChitoGauze -- works by binding directly to red blood cells through electrostatic attraction, forming a clot independent of the body's normal coagulation cascade. This makes chitosan effective even in patients on blood thinners or in hypothermic conditions. Kaolin-based gauze like QuikClot Combat Gauze works by activating Factor XII to trigger the body's own clotting system -- it's the CoTCCC-recommended standard and widely issued to military units worldwide.
