Bandages
Pressure bandages combine a sterile wound dressing with an integrated elastic wrap, letting one responder apply direct pressure to a bleeding wound and keep it applied hands-free. After tourniquets and wound packing, the pressure dressing handles the broad middle ground of wounds that are serious but not amputation-level, and every kit from an IFAK to an ambulance carries them. Military medics, EMS providers, and trained civilians all use this category constantly.
The selection covers emergency trauma dressings and compression bandages from field-proven brands like North American Rescue, TacMed Solutions, and Safeguard Medical, in widths from compact four-inch formats to abdominal sizes, with flat-packed options built for space-limited kits.
The design details are what separate a trauma dressing from a drugstore bandage. Integrated pressure bars or applicators concentrate force directly over the wound, elastic wraps maintain that pressure without a second set of hands, and closure systems secure without clips that fail or tape that quits when wet. Vacuum-sealed flat packaging matters more than it sounds, saving real volume across a stocked kit, and tear-notch wrappers open with gloved, wet, or bloody hands. Size selection is straightforward: four-inch dressings cover most extremity wounds, six-inch and abdominal formats cover larger surfaces, and a kit should carry more than one, because serious trauma rarely limits itself to a single wound.
Pair dressings with gauze for wound packing underneath, escalate to a tourniquet when pressure isn't enough, and keep everything organized in a medical pouch.

A pressure bandage, also called an emergency trauma dressing, combines a sterile non-adherent pad with an elastic wrap and is used in conjunction with wound packing to maintain pressure on a bleed. Once the wound is packed, the bandage holds steady pressure over the packing so bleeding stays controlled without someone holding it by hand. Many, like the Israeli Emergency Bandage, add a pressure bar or closure device for one-handed use, and they're a core part of any IFAK or trauma kit.
A tourniquet is the first choice for life-threatening bleeding from an arm or leg. For wounds a tourniquet can't be applied to, such as the neck, armpit, or groin, or for bleeding that doesn't call for one, pack the wound and use a pressure bandage to maintain pressure on the packing. If bleeding soaks through or continues on a limb, reassess and apply a tourniquet.
Pack the wound with hemostatic or plain gauze and hold direct pressure, then place the bandage's pad over the packing and wrap the bandage firmly around the limb or body to keep pressure on the wound. Secure the end with the bandage's built-in closure, whether that's a closure bar, a clip, or a self-adhering wrap. Watch for bleed-through, check circulation below the bandage, and apply a tourniquet if bleeding on a limb isn't controlled.
You need gauze to pack the wound, and hemostatic gauze is a common choice. Pressure bandages are used in conjunction with wound packing: the gauze fills the wound, and the bandage maintains pressure on the bleed so you don't have to hold it by hand. Carrying both in your kit lets you pack the wound and keep pressure on it while you treat other injuries or move the patient.
Pressure bandages come in a range of sizes, from compact 4-inch bandages to 6-inch bandages and larger abdominal dressings for big wounds. A 4-inch bandage is the common choice for an IFAK, since it's compact and works on most limb wounds. Larger sizes fit better in trauma, vehicle, or team kits where there's room for them.
Both pair a sterile non-adherent pad with an elastic wrap and secure without tape. The Israeli Emergency Bandage adds a built-in pressure bar that delivers direct pressure over the wound and a closure bar to lock it in place, while North American Rescue's Emergency Trauma Dressing leaves out the pressure bar to reduce the fine motor skills needed under stress, using Quick-Grip Roll Control tabs to keep the wrap from unrolling and a clip to secure the end. Both come in multiple sizes, so the choice often comes down to training and preference.
Battle Wrap is a clear, self-adhering compression wrap used as an adjunct in hemorrhage control, applied over wound packing or a dressing to maintain circumferential pressure on the bleed. Because it's transparent, you can see bleeding and reassess the wound without unwrapping it. Pair it with packing gauze and a sterile pad, or choose the Battle Bandage, which combines Battle Wrap with an 8 x 8 inch gauze pad in one dressing.
Yes. Sterile bandages carry a shelf life printed on the package, such as 8 years for the Israeli Emergency Bandage, 6 years for the Battle Bandage, and 5 years for the HEMGUARD. Replace bandages that are expired or damaged, including any whose sealed packaging has been punctured, since that compromises sterility.
A clear, ultra-thin compression wrap, Battle Wrap lets you see bleeding and rapidly reassess the wound while it applies circumferential pressure. Used with a hemostatic, it can amplify a pressure dressing application, and its self-adhering, medical grade adhesive is non-irritating and leaves no residue on the skin. It exceeds the holding power of traditional compression wraps without shredding or delaminating in challenging environments, and it's made in the USA without natural rubber latex.
6:8 Medical HEMGUARD Targeted Pressure Bandage
Built for the wounds standard bandages struggle with, the HEMGUARD simplifies bandaging the neck, armpit, groin, and amputated limbs. Four-way redirection lets you anchor the bandage in place to maximize point pressure, it offers mechanical advantage in two directions, and a targeted pressure head helps prevent rebleeding and constriction complications. The latex-free, single-patient bandage is 4 inches wide by 163 cm long, weighs 4 oz, and has a 5-year shelf life.
The first and only transparent compression bandage, the Battle Bandage pairs Battle Wrap technology with a sterile 8 x 8 inch cotton gauze pad that absorbs up to one liter of fluid, so you can monitor for bleed-through without removing it. The self-adhering, non-slip wrap needs no clips or ties, has 5,000 psi tensile strength, and exceeds MIL-STD 810G temperature tolerance standards. At 2.5 oz, it takes 80 to 93% less cube space than standard compression bandages and has a 6-year shelf life.
The original all-in-one trauma pressure dressing, the Israeli Emergency Bandage is trusted by military, law enforcement, and first responders in over 50 countries and has been standard issue for U.S. Army soldiers since 2001. Its built-in pressure applicator bar delivers 30 to 40 lbs of direct wound pressure, and the closure bar secures it without pins, clips, tape, or knots for true one-handed self-application. The 4-inch version is sized for arm, lower leg, hand, and scalp wounds and fits easily in an IFAK, with a 6-inch version for thighs, torsos, and larger wounds.
