Rigs & Plate Carriers

Tactical rigs are the load-bearing platforms that put a fighting or duty load on the body: plate carriers, chest rigs, belts, leg rigs, and helmets that turn individual pieces of equipment into a wearable system. How a load is carried determines how long it can be carried and how fast its contents can be reached, which is why rig selection is one of the most consequential gear decisions a professional makes. Military personnel, law enforcement, and armed civilians training seriously all build from this category.

This category features plate carriers that combine armor and load carriage, standalone chest rigs for lighter mobile loads, duty and battle belts, leg rigs, and helmets including bump and ballistic-rated options. Platforms come from trusted brands like Condor, High Speed Gear, Agilite, Tasmanian Tiger, KORE Essentials, and Ops-Core.

Choose the platform before the pouches. A plate carrier makes sense when armor is part of the requirement; a chest rig carries the same magazines and equipment at a fraction of the weight and heat burden when it is not, and many designs layer over a carrier when needs change. Belts follow the same logic, with two-piece inner/outer systems keeping a loaded belt indexed in the same position every time it goes on. Fit is everything on all of them: carriers are sized to plates, and plates are sized to the wearer, so measure before buying.

Build the platform out with modular pouches, add armor plates where the mission requires protection, and keep a rig-mounted IFAK on every configuration.

The terms are often used interchangeably, and there's no strict industry definition separating them. In general, all three describe a stiffened belt built to carry a holster and other gear without sagging, and the differences come down to how the belt is set up and used. Some are single belts worn through the pants loops for everyday carry, while others use a two-piece inner and outer system with MOLLE webbing for heavier loads, so choose a belt based on what you plan to carry and how you'll wear it rather than by name.

A battle belt keeps a holster, magazines, medical, and other gear in the same place every time you put it on, which makes it one of the most practical platforms for training. That consistency builds the repetition needed for smooth draws, reloads, and medical access on the range, in classes, and in competition. For preparedness, a belt that's already set up can be staged and put on in seconds during an emergency, carrying essentials at the hips without committing to a full plate carrier or chest rig.

Use a plate carrier when ballistic protection is part of the requirement, since it's the platform that holds armor plates front and back while also carrying gear. A chest rig makes more sense when armor isn't needed, carrying the same magazines and medical equipment with less weight and heat for training, field use, or extended movement. Many chest rigs and placards can also attach to the front of a plate carrier, so one setup can move between the two as needs change.

Most plate carriers and chest rigs use PALS webbing, so MOLLE pouches attach by weaving their straps or clips alternately through the webbing on the back of the pouch and the rows on the rig, working down until the pouch is locked in place. Laser-cut platforms work the same way, with slots cut into laminate instead of sewn webbing. Placard-compatible rigs can also accept a front panel that attaches with hook and loop plus buckles or G-hooks, letting you swap a full magazine or admin setup in seconds.

Most battle belts are lined with rows of PALS webbing, so MOLLE pouches attach the same way they do on a plate carrier, by weaving the straps or clips through both the pouch and the belt. Belts typically have three rows of webbing, so pouches designed for belt mounting tend to sit more securely than tall pouches built for vests, and some use belt loops or mounts like Tek-Lok instead of MOLLE. Place magazines on the support-hand side and keep medical gear reachable with either hand.

A bump helmet protects the head from blunt impact rather than bullets or fragmentation, so it's used for training, climbing, vehicle operations, and other situations where impact is the main concern. Bump helmets are also widely used as a lightweight, stable platform for night vision, lights, and communications headsets mounted to their rails and shroud.

A ballistic helmet is built from materials like aramid or ultra-high-molecular-weight polyethylene and is rated to stop specific handgun rounds and fragmentation, typically to NIJ Level IIIA. A bump helmet uses a lighter polymer or composite shell that protects only against impact, making it lighter, cooler, and less expensive, but with no ballistic protection. Many helmets come in both versions with the same high-cut shape, rails, and accessory mounts, so a common approach is to train in a bump helmet and wear a ballistic helmet when a threat is present.
