EMP Shield makes electromagnetic pulse protection devices, the first designed to defend an entire home, vehicle, or generator from an EMP event. Founded in 2017 by Tim Carty in Burlington, Kansas, and made in the USA, the company grew out of a surge-protector design and became the first to offer whole-system EMP defense to the public. Its devices are aimed at homeowners, preppers, and anyone concerned with protecting electronics from a grid-scale electrical event.

The lineup covers whole-home, vehicle, and generator protection modules that install into an electrical system, defending everything connected to it. The devices also serve as high-speed surge protection against more everyday threats.

The technology works by shunting a voltage surge away from equipment faster than it can cause damage, reacting in under one billionth of a second. EMP Shield protects against all three phases of an electromagnetic pulse (E1, E2, and E3) as well as coronal mass ejections (solar flares), lightning, and ordinary power surges, and it is built to exceed the military standards written for EMP protection. That breadth matters because earlier military-grade surge protectors could handle only a single high-altitude EMP before burning out and did not cover all three phases. Because the same device also defends against far more common threats like lightning and grid surges, it earns its place regardless of how one weighs the likelihood of a large-scale event. For preparedness planning, protecting electronics is a category that is otherwise hard to address.
