What is a bug out bag?

A bug out bag is a pre-packed emergency kit designed to sustain you for 72 hours or more when you need to leave your location quickly. Also called a BOB, go bag, or get home bag depending on the intended use.

How much should a bug out bag weigh?

A general rule is to keep your loaded BOB under 20–25% of your body weight. Most practical setups fall between 25–40 lbs depending on scenario length and individual fitness. A lighter, well-prioritized kit outperforms a heavy kit with filler every time.

What is the difference between a bug out bag and a get home bag?

A bug out bag is built for leaving home and sustaining yourself for multiple days. A get home bag is lighter and optimized for a single mission: getting from wherever you are back to home, typically kept in a vehicle.

Should I buy a pre-made kit or build my own bug out bag?

Pre-made kits are faster to acquire and well-suited for buyers who want a ready solution. Building your own gives you control over every component — weight, quality, and configuration — and is usually the better option for buyers with specific requirements or existing gear.

What is the best bag to use as a bug out bag?

Look for 35–55L capacity, a structured frame, load-bearing hip belt, MOLLE webbing for expansion, and a durable fabric rated for outdoor use. Eberlestock, Condor, 5.11, and Tasmanian Tiger are proven platforms.
