Tourniquets stop life-threatening extremity bleeding faster than any other intervention, and they have moved from last resort to first-line treatment on the strength of two decades of battlefield and civilian trauma data. Massive hemorrhage from a limb can be fatal in minutes, well inside any ambulance response time, which is why tourniquets are now carried by soldiers, police officers, EMS providers, teachers, and prepared civilians rather than staged only in hospitals.
Here you'll find windlass designs like the North American Rescue CAT, the field standard most training programs teach; elastic designs like the Safeguard Medical SWAT-T, which doubles as a pressure dressing; and additional field-proven options from brands like the TacMed Solutions SOF-T tourniquet. Third, one-hand application: a tourniquet you may apply to yourself must work with your remaining hand, which is exactly what windlass designs are engineered for. Tourniquets are usually made of a strong, adjustable band, and are applied by wrapping the band around the limb above the wound and tightening it (usually with a windlass) until the bleeding stops. Anyone who may be exposed to traumatic injuries, such as first responders, medical professionals, law enforcement officers, military personnel, and wilderness adventurers, should carry a tourniquet. It is important to be trained in its proper application and use.
